Credit English for Career Courses

English for Career courses provide students the opportunity to explore and prepare for jobs in different fields, for example, the culinary arts, construction, early childcare education, STEM, and healthcare industries. These classes usually meet once a week and can be taken alone or in conjunction with general EMLS courses. Students in these classes are able to practice specialized English and count these classes as electives toward several EMLS certificates.

 

EMLS 332: Desktop and Cloud Applications for Multilingual Students

This is a course for multilingual students who are interested in expanding their computer literacy skills and includes reading, vocabulary, study and test-taking strategies, and written and oral communication skills. Students use word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software as they develop language skills.

 

EMLS 334: ESL for the Health Sciences

In this course, students will become familiar with health career pathways, occupation-specific terminology, and communication skills. This course is designed for multilingual students who are interested in building a linguistic foundation for introductory classes in the healthcare field.

 

EMLS 335: English for Culinary Arts

This course is designed for multilingual students and provides a linguistic foundation for introductory Culinary Arts classes.  Students will become familiar with basic culinary and food safety vocabulary; learn reading, writing and test-taking skills; and improve oral communication skills necessary for the professional culinary environment.

 

EMLS 353: English for Early Childhood Professionals

In this course, multilingual students who are preparing to work with young children aged 0-12 will practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills used in Early Childhood Education (ECE) settings.
